OpenLife Grid

Visit the official page @ http://www.openlifegrid.com. Purchase a mainland sim (65Km2, 15K prims) for only $90 USD incl. first month’s tier and $15USD dollar processing fee. Tier thereafter is due every 28 days/4 weeks and is $75 USD

PLEASE NOTE: this grid is built on opensource code and is NOT SecondLife, you will not be able to do all that you can do on SL in OL.

VIEW THE OPENLIFE WIKI HERE (while the info I have listed here from my personal experience my prove useful to some, the official wiki is also a great and probably the best source of information for those who are interested in OL, I accept no responsibility for issues that may arise if you base any of your OL choices from my blurb here, just my disclaimer, caveat emptor and my way of saying, don’t come crying to me, lol.)

Features that I have tried that are currently working for me, I only list things that I have tried myself anything that is “hearsay” meaning I’ve heard from other residents but haven’t tried myself will be noted appropriately, please remember that your own experience may vary depending on your connection, computer configuration, position of the sun and or moon, and the presence of pink socks on your feet, lol. (I am on Mac OS X Tiger, using a G4 Powerbook and G5 Intel Imac that both meet LL’s minimum suggested requirements for use, I connect to OL using the SL Viewer as there is no ReX viewer for Mac at the moment)

Land Ownership/Management
Sim Purchase
  • At the time of this posting, OL offers Mainland Sims for sale as part of the “Foundation Resident Event” upon the purchase of the sim you become a Foundation Resident. This basically means you can build on the purchased sim and change the name of the parcel, you cannot change the location, name of the sim nor alter the terrain files as they have already been pre-determined by OL. There are no private regions that you can purchase from OL, Standalone Regions which you host yourself on your own servers do not connect to the OL public grid. As a Foundation resident you can own up to four mainland sims.
  • To Purchase a mainland sim Visit the OL Land Store, you can purchase through Paypal or Credit Card, after which you will get an invoice from paypal and another invoice from OL.
  • Be sure to check the OpenLife Poke System to see if your Sim transfer has gone through and your blog has been activated. The blog can be used to document development in your sim and post about events that you may host, a very cool feature.
  • Don’t email payments@openlifegrid.com as I tried this and the messages bounced back, it’s best to make a post on the forums or email support@openlifegrid.com if you have issues related to sim transfer/ownership titles. Sakai can also be found at times in the chatrooms and in world if you’re lucky :) Remember to remain calm and courteous when communicating with Sakai, just a suggestion from me, you can imagine that the guy is under alot of stress dealing with his own grid so if you approach him like an uncivilized baboon demanding to know what’s going and accusing him of something, it’s just not…..good, lol. Patience is a virtue, your mantra as a Foundation Resident should be “in due time” lol.

Currency

  • There is no in world currency at the moment, a balance appears on the top right screen but it does not deplete, paying other avatars does nothing
  • uploading textures does not deplete $ balance, if/when you relog you will always be back at $10000
Setting Items for Sale
  • Setting items for sale does not work at this time, I have had success using Take as a Copy though

Building

Prims

  • rez prims up to 10mx10mx10m (I’ve heard that you can make prims >100m if you use the ReX viewer, lucky windows-using bastards, I’ve also seen the huge prims in use on the grid, at this time there is no “huge prim” set that you can use from your inventory, I’ve also been told by other OL residents that if another avatar were to try to edit a huge prim made by someone else it would revert back to a regular prim, something i haven’t tried myself)
  • cut & hollow
  • color
  • texture
  • place items in prim contents, but you cannot retrieve them/open them
  • Link and Unlink, linking is not suggested especially if you have hollowed prims as they may rotate/prim drift
  • Locking prims is not suggested at this time as your prims will get stuck
Scripts
  • I have very limited knowledge of LSL, there is a OL wiki on LSL that you can view here
  • A script that i have seen implemented myself is the smooth_anim script, seen on the waterfalls on OL welcome island
World Map + Teleporting
  • Teleporting from log-in menu works iffishly
  • Loading the world map takes a few moments if you try to teleport without a region being loaded you may get stuck in TP limbo or crash
  • I’m finding that sim load in a quad depending on the region that you are currently in or have been, for example if i’m in my Sim, Celeste, the regions around it will be loaded and teleported forming a 4-square, if i try to tp anywhere outside of this quad, I die, lol.
  • Landmarks do not work at this time
  • Mini-map works as it does in Secondlife
Avatar Appearance/Body Parts and Related
Prim Attachments
  • Prim attachments do not work, this means no prim hair, this means slider hair *shudders*
Skins
  • All avatars start out as the default ruth, but the skin seems a little more detailed than the LL one, she OL Ruth by default is a caucasian female, you can remove this skin and use the flat toned LL supplied ones using sliders and etc, but you will not be able to get OL Ruth skin back
  • I uploaded Eloh Eliots Another Skin in the Dark Tone (fe) and made a skin for myself using this, I’m happy to report that the skin stayed on my avatar when i logged and relogged many times, woot!, it should be noted that although the skin remained attached to my avatar, it did not stay in my inventory after relog, I have yet to have anything remain in my inventory after a relog
  • The process of making a new skin for yourself is the same as in SL BUT you cannot layer your skin textures on the OL Ruth Skin you must go in your inventory and create a new skin from the drop down menu >> wear the skin >> go into edit appearance under the skin tab and apply the new skin textures as appropriate >>DON’T forget to save
Clothing
  • I haven’t tried uploading any custom clothes for my avatar(s) just yet, but i have seen custom clothing on other avatars, t-shirts and jeans, etc.when you first log into OL you get the Ruth outfit which is composed of a purple-T and salmon colour pants *cringes at the colour scheme*
